• Mar 20 -- A 10-man NOTS team spent a week aboard the USS Ticonderoga
shooting film on the flight deck of the flattop in which the star was
the Sidewinder 1C. • Mar 31 -- U.S. Air Force Major Thomas
R. Brock (pilot) and passengers Hobart C. Hale,
Edward L. Taylor & Clarence E. Yates
(all VX-5 enlisted) lost their lives when the UC-45J Bugsmasher (29581)
crashed in a storm 7 miles southwest of Mt. Whitney on Mt. Lancaster.
• May 8 -- "Desert Strike" maneuvers involving more than 100,000
personnel over a three state area finds NOTS China Lake playing host
to 52 Air Combat Support Element in a support as base of operations.
• May 16 -- U.S. Navy AE-3 Donald R. Baker lost his life
in a skydiving demonstration for Armed Forces Day. • May 29 -- VX-5
adopts the nickname Vampires. Winning contestant ADJ3 Charles E. White
was presented a Vampire trophy by VX-5 CO Jack M. Manherz. • July
1 -- NAF has 36 aviation officers (1 SCI), 6 other officers,

• June 13 -- Titan III test on NOTS SNORT track sets four records. Rocket
segment three times larger and heavier than anything previously run
on the track, demolished a 6-foot thick, steel reinforced concrete target.
• September -- Highly successful firings of Redeye, the worlds smallest
guided missile system, were scored. The audience included U.S. congressional
representatives, high ranking military officials, representatives of
nine NATO nations and U.S. allies and scores of newsmen.
