The silicone coating on NAF China Lake F-8D Crusader BuNo
147049 is still intact, but thin, after three firings, China
Lake, 22 February 1963. The coating was developed to protect
against the corrosive gases of air-launched missiles. Elder
Bartel of the Plastics Section, Materials Eng. Branch, Eng.
Department, conducted 65 tests before the proper coating was
